Native San Diegan, Maryann Luera's body of work encompasses a varied array of images and subject matter, offering the viewer a unique perspective on established ethnic themes. Born to a Mexican mother and a “Tex-Mex” father, Maryann grew up surrounded by the Latino culture, the elements of which play a major role in most of her work. In her pieces she endeavors to pay homage to her Latino roots and traditions, while using elements that run the gamut from traditional religious imagery of the Catholic faith, to the iconic Bullfighters and Charros (Mexican Cowboys), to the fanciful Calavera (skull), so prevalent in the holiday of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

In taking traditional themes of her history and giving them a modern twist, she expresses a love and respect for her heritage, roots and traditions.

In her figurative paintings, Maryann explores gender perceptions and expectations, depicting idealized male figures in situations and roles traditionally reserved for the female figure. These images encourage us to examine established gender roles in society and their effect on our everyday lives.

Maryann has been painting for over 20 years. She holds a BA in Fine Art from the University of San Diego and an MFA from San Diego State University. She currently divides her time between her own painting and teaching Art and Painting at San Diego State University and the University of San Diego.
